The Month of March has been designated as Florida Bike Month by the Florida Bicycle Association. During this month, events are held around the country to introduce bicycling to new riders, cultivate the local bicycling culture, and showcase the health and wellness benefits of bicycling. Bicycling is relatively easy in Florida, can be enjoyed year-round, and is a viable and responsible transportation choice. The health benefits of cycling go far beyond the physical, as it engages all ages, saves money and gas, reduces traffic congestion and air pollution.
Since 2017, Forward Pinellas, in its role as the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), has hosted an annual Bike Your City event in March to celebrate Florida Bicycle Month. Bike Your City (BYC) is a group bike ride to draw attention to bicycle and pedestrian safety needs and trail etiquette, as well as highlight all the beautiful cities in Pinellas County. A new city has been featured each year. The event is designed to encourage cycling for all persons, whether an experienced road warrior, or those who ride just for the love of bicycling.
Over 2,000 people have participated in Bike Your City!
This year, Forward Pinellas partnered with the City of Oldsmar to host the event on Friday, March 10th. Registration is underway for this annual event. Visit the Bike Your City 2023 Event page for additional information and to register.
“I enjoy bicycling around my neighborhood and community because I can notice unique things like interesting houses and wild rabbits and interact with people in a way that is not possible when driving. Pinellas County is lucky to have many local communities that all have their own unique quirks and charms. Bike Your City aims to highlight the unique assets in communities around the county on a comfortable, social bicycle ride.”
