Forward Pinellas Awarded a “Safe Streets for All” Grant
~~ The U.S. Department of Transportation has selected Forward Pinellas as a recipient of a Safe Streets for All (SS4A) Grant. ~~
PINELLAS COUNTY, FL —- On September 5, 2024, Forward Pinellas was awarded a Safe Streets for All (SS4A) Grant by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) totaling $400,000. In Forward Pinellas’ role as the Pinellas County Metropolitan Planning Organization, the funds will be allocated to improve upon the Safe Streets Pinellas Action Plan and identify investments to improve transportation safety countywide.
The funds will be used to update the Action Plan with current data, expand stakeholder and public involvement, utilize near-miss technology to identify improvements at locations with known safety challenges, and to create a dashboard to display data and track progress towards the goal of zero transportation-related fatalities in our county. The funds will also be used to assist local jurisdictions in evaluating their land development and transportation manual plans to identify specific areas for improvement and recommend changes to improve safety. All local government jurisdictions within the county will be invited to participate in this effort.
The Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program was created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) to fund regional, local, and Tribal initiatives through grants to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries. The program supports USDOT’s goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on our nation’s roadways. Through the SS4A program, Forward Pinellas developed Safe Streets Pinellas as a comprehensive safety action plan for reaching our goal of zero deaths and serious injuries in Pinellas County by 2045. The Action Plan, adopted in 2021, includes a robust regional analysis of safety, including policy, trends, and countermeasures.
