Beltrees Street from Edgewater Drive (Alt 19) to Patricia Avenue
City of Dunedin – Beltrees Street
PROJECT AREA
OVERVIEW
Beltrees Street is a two-lane undivided local road, with a posted speed limit of 25 MPH. It is approximately 1 mile in length and runs east and west, just south of Downtown Dunedin. It primarily consists of residential land uses but also includes a mix of commercial, civic, educational and recreational land uses, notably the Spring Training headquarters for the Toronto Blue Jays (TD Ballpark) and Curtis Fundamental Elementary School. A heavily used portion of the Pinellas Trail also crosses Beltress St.
CRASH DATA
- 23 collisions were reported
- There was no fatal or serious injury crashes
- 3 crashes involved a bicyclist/one involved a pedestrian
KEY SAFETY CONCERNS
- Speeding (80% of drivers exceed the 25MPH posted speed)
- Lack of consistent and comfortable pedestrian infrastructure along the corridor
- Inconsistent bicycle infrastructure
- Crash patterns that could lead to more severe crashes in the future and reported near-miss crashes
PROPOSED COUNTERMEASURES/SOLUTIONS
- Slow vehicle speeds (Speed feedback signs, automated speed cameras in school zone, neighborhood traffic circle, lane narrowing)
- Create a safer, more comfortable environment for bicyclists, pedestrians and reduce conflict points (High emphasis and raised crosswalks, Rectangular Rapid Flashing Hybrid Beacon – RRFB, shared use path and bike lanes where appropriate, widen sidewalks, and landscape buffers)
- Increase attentiveness and awareness of drivers (Speed feedback signs, improve Pinellas Trail Crossing, relocate school zone flashers to be inline with pavement markings, and install retro-reflective backplates on signal lighting)
