Every day, thousands of Pinellas County residents travel to other counties for work, shopping and recreation. Conversely, thousands of people from other counties come into Pinellas each day for the same reasons. The transportation system internal to Pinellas County is part of a larger regional multimodal transportation system serving the Tampa Bay area. Regional connections in Pinellas serve a vital role for business, tourism and the mobility of the county’s residents and goods. The regional connections in Pinellas are critical for all modes of travel, including personal vehicles, freight, public transportation, multiuse trails and waterborne transportation.
Tampa Bay Transportation Management Area Leadership Group
The Tampa Bay Transportation Management Area (TMA) includes nearly all of Pinellas County and the urban areas of Hillsborough and Pasco counties. Close coordination with key partners in the TMA is necessary for transportation facilities and services to effectively serve the mobility needs of its residents and visitors. The TMA Leadership Group plays a key role in the coordination of transportation plans and programs in this urban region. The group is comprised of three MPO Board members each from Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties. They were formed in 2013 to serve in an advisory role to the area MPOs; develop regional consensus priorities for the TMA, particularly in the allocation of Federal urbanized area funding; and to help the Tampa Bay metropolitan area speak with one voice in discussions of regional transportation issues and resources. The three Tampa Bay MPOs provide staff support to the Leadership Group. Further information on the Leadership Group and Tampa Bay TMA is available in the TMA Profile.
Tampa Bay Area Regional Transit Authority
Coordinating transportation planning in the West Central Florida region is the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transit Authority (TBARTA). Previously the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transportation Authority, it was re-shaped by the Florida Legislature in 2017 to have a more transit-focused mission. The agency was tasked with developing and implementing a Regional Transit Development Plan for the West Central Florida region consisting of Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, and Pinellas Counties. The agency is governed by a board of elected officials and appointed members from around the region. TBARTA also supports the regional Joint Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC), which is made up of citizen representatives.
Chairs Coordinating Committee
The TBARTA West Central Florida MPO Chairs Coordinating Committee (CCC) also serves the West Central Florida area, including Polk County as well as Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas and Sarasota counties. The CCC provides a forum for coordinating transportation planning, and prioritizing roadway and trail projects while ensuring a consistent approach among the member agencies. These agencies include the area’s MPOs and regional planning councils, FDOT Districts 1 and 7, and Florida Turnpike Enterprise. The Tampa Bay Regional Transportation Authority (TBARTA) is also represented on the CCC in a non-voting capacity.
Note: TBARTA meeting information is available on TBARTA’s website.
